HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. There is currently no effective cure for HIV. However, with proper medical care HIV can be controlled.
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the most severe stage of HIV (Stage 3). People with AIDS have badly damaged immune systems so they get an increasing number of severe illnesses called opportunistic infections (OIs). Today, OIs are less common in people with HIV because of effective HIV treatment.
Case Management
When a blood test is confirmed positive for HIV, individuals find themselves facing life altering decisions. To help support them, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services funds an HIV/AIDS Case Management Program that provides assistance to locate, coordinate, purchase and refer for medical and psychosocial services based on assessed need.
Thanks to the HIV/AIDS Case Management Program, the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center has an HIV/AIDS case manager available on staff. Without regard to health insurance status, this public health nurse supports individuals through the maze of options and assistance that are available from different resources. This includes addressing all identified client needs, such as access to:
- Medical care
- Housing
- Mental health services
- And much more
